According to a recent report by the Wall Street Journal, some iPhone thieves are exploiting a security setting known as the recovery key, leaving owners unable to access their photos, messages, data, and more. Some victims have even had their bank accounts drained after the thieves gained access to their financial apps.

While this type of takeover is challenging to execute, it involves criminals closely observing an iPhone user entering their passcode, such as peeking over their shoulder at a bar or sporting event. Alternatively, they may manipulate the device’s owner into revealing their passcode. Only after physically stealing the device can the thief use the passcode to change the device’s Apple ID and disable “Find my iPhone” to avoid location tracking. They can then reset the recovery key, a complex 28-digit code intended to safeguard against online hackers.

Apple mandates this key to assist in resetting or regaining access to an Apple ID to enhance user security. However, if a thief changes the recovery key, the original owner will not possess the new code, leading to a lockout of their account.

In response to these incidents, an Apple spokesperson stated, “We sympathize with people who have had this experience and we take all attacks on our users very seriously, no matter how rare. We work tirelessly every day to protect our users’ accounts and data, and are always investigating additional protections against emerging threats like this one.”
